After Madonna's 1985 The Virgin Tour, which took her to the biggest citites in North America and Canada, this is Madonna's very first full-blown world tour which had her visiting cities in North America, Canada, Asia and Europe.
'The Who's That Girl World Tour' was - in 1987 - the biggest and highest-grossing tour ever. In total Madonna grossed approx. US$ 20 million on this tour (she grossed over a half million dollars for every date she played).

This record was broken by no one else than Michael Jackson: According to several sources his 1988 'Bad' Tour is the biggest concert-tour ever and grossed over US$ 125 million.
In comparison to 'The Who's That Girl Tour', Madonna's first 'The Virgin Tour' looks like a simple pop-show: There was still a lot of sex in 'The Who's That Girl Tour' but this time Madonna also had a message.

Seveal times during the show the gigantic video-screens were used to make comments on society and religion (The Pope and then-President of the United States Ronald Reagan) and sexuality ('Safe Sex').
Madonna has 7 costume changes during the show. All the costumes, from the 'Open Your Heart' opening-number bustier to the Andy Warhol-inspired jacket, were designed by Marlene Stewart.
In Japan, a thousand troops had to restrain a crowd of 25'000 fans seeking to greet Madonna at the airport.

When severe storms forced the cencellation of her first shows, despondent fans nearly rioted, and Madonna was confronted with out-of-control teenagers soaking themselves in the rain outside the stadium. Promoters had no choice but to refund US$ 7 million to ticket-buyers.
Madonna's Madison Square Garden-show in New York City was an AIDS benefit with all the proceeds from the show going to AmFAR. She dedicated her performance of 'Live To Tell' to her late friend Martin Burgoyne (the designer of the single-artwork for Madonna's Burning Up-Single)..
Her first 2 shows at Wembley Stadium in London, UK sold out at a then record-breaking time of 18 hours and 9 minutes (144'000 tickets).
Just like on 'The Virgin Tour', Madonna once again used another classic song as an interlude during her performance of 'Like A Virgin'. This time it was a short segment of 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) ' by The Four Tops.

Rumours in the late '80s even suggested that Madonna considered to record the song on her own but instead she used a few inspirational parts of it for her Who's That Girl soundtrack-song 'Can't Stop'.
Joining her on the tour was 16-year old Christopher Finch. He replaced Felix Howard, the boy from the Open Your Heart-Video, who didn't got a working permit in order to participate on the tour.
