'Erotica'
is without a question Madonna's most underrated
work to date. It was released in the wake
of the hyper-controversial Erotica-Video
and the Sex-Book.
Reviewers - and fans - did pay more attention
to the general event than to the songs. A
terrible mistake. Madonna proved to be way
ahead of her time with the combination of
pop, house, jazz and hip-hop.
It's the first Madonna-album that was released
on her very own Maverick Record Label which
she founded the very same year in April 1992
together with former manager Freddy DeMann.
The name Maverick is a combination of their
first names: MAdonna VEronica
+ FredeRICK
The album features one of the rare cover-versions
Madonna has done in her career: 'Fever'
- originally performed by Peggy Lee and also
interpreted by Elvis Presley. 'Fever'
wasn't planned to be featured in the album
originally, instead Madonna had recorded a
song called 'Goodbye To Innocence'
(Later released on the Warner-Sampler Just
Say Roe in 1994). |

All
pictures in the 'Erotica'-Booklet have been
photographed by Steven Meisel - who was also responsible
for the pictures in Madonna's Sex-Book.
In case you were wondering: It's NOT super-model's
Naomi Campbell's toe Madonna is sucking on the back-cover
- it's Tony Ward's toe!
'Erotica' isn't one of Madonna's best selling
albums but has sold an estimated 7-8 million copies
worldwide.
Madonna worked for most parts of the album with
Shep Pettibone. He previously had collaborated with
her on Vogue
and Rescue
Me. Click
here for Shep Pettibone's 'Erotica Diary'
which originally has appeared in one of Madonna's
Official Fanclub Magazines. It's a very interesting
read.
Also
noteable: A special version of the song 'Erotica'
called 'Erotic', with completely different
lyrics, was released as a Promo Only CD which was
only available together with the purchase of Madonna's
Sex-Book.
