What an uproar
it was in the Madonna-community when it was
announced in mid-September 2003 that Madonna
had agreed to sing a duet with Britney Spears.
Eventually the first wave of hatred cooled
down and most fans were eager to hear the
track - with most fans having to agree in
the end that it indeed was quite a cool song
which suited Madonna just fine.
Strangely, in over 20 years of having a strong
career, this is one of the rare duets Madonna
has recorded [the others being only 'Love
Song' with Prince from Like
A Prayer, 'Be Careful [Cuidado Con
My Corazón] with Ricky Martin from
his self-titled
album, 'Guilty By Association'
with Joe Henry from Sweet
Relief II and 'What Can You Lose'
with Mandy Patinkin from I'm
Breathless] and the only duet having seen
a worldwide release as a single.
Expecations were high for this duet, especially
after the infamous kiss Madonna and Britney
shared on stage at the MTV
Video Music Awards the same year.
The single
was received with much enthusiasm all over
the world, but only peaked at #35 in the US.
Europe, on the other hand, embraced the track:
It made it into the Top 10 of all European
countries!
Later on, Me
Against The Music was also included in
a slightly longer version on Britney's 'In
The Zone'-album which also includes another
remix of the song.
In the liner-notes of the booklet, Britney
thanks Madonna as follows:
"Madonna, for being on my record.
This is something I'll always remember, thank
you." |
